The Detroit Police Department was established in 1865 with 40 officers. Originally, these officers patrolled the neighborhoods and business districts on foot. In 1897, the department became one of the first to put its officers on bicycles. To improve police response time, they developed one of the earliest motorized forces, and was the first department to use Harley Davidson motorcycles. In 1909, they became the first department to use the patrol car.
